In March, 120 students from schools across the North West took part in a one-day anti-bullying training session run by The Diana Award at âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ (DHS).

The Diana Award’s free Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme sees facilitators working with students and other young people to change the attitude surrounding bullying both in the UK and further afield.

The programme has a strong peer-to-peer focus, encouraging young people to become Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who can tackle bullying in the long-term.

Students from Years 7-10 worked together to gain the skills and the confidence needed to challenge behaviour and change attitudes surrounding bullying in their school.

They learned strategies to help address different situations, both online and offline.

At the end of the day, students made an action plan of how to approach issues that may arise in their schools and committed to their roles as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.

Commenting on the training, DHS student Connie said: “it was a helpful insight into how to help prevent bullying in our school and it provided the knowledge to make our school community inclusive for everyoneâ€

DHS student Daniel added: “it helped me realise that you can’t be against bullying without actually doing something about itâ€

From Pride Rock to proud parents and carers, âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ Students stunned the audience with their first ever school production, Lion King Jr.

The production took place over three successive nights after two years of blackout due to Covid restrictions.

The show featured a range of young and founding students who all have different experience in theatre from inside and outside of school, with several students playing their first principal role.

The production was a spoken and singing performance which showcased the talent in the Performing Arts and Music departments with live African drums played by students.

The cast took us through the story of a young lion learning what it will be like to become king and take his farther place leading the pride.

Congratulations to all the students who were involved and thank you to the production staff for making the performance one we will never forget!

Over a week during February âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ worked in partnership with Chethams School of Music while they took up residence at the school.

The sixth form symphony orchestra took up residence in the school sixth form and auditorium and rehearsed for a performance taking place at The Stoller Hall with guest conductor Jonathan Bloxham.

A programme of activities was planned for the DHS students which included lessons, workshops and performances.

During the course of the week we saw students learning orchestral instruments come together to play as an orchestra for the first time and 35 students from across the Trust came to DHS for a day to observe the orchestra in rehearsal and to take part in improvisation workshops led by Halle orchestra bassoon player Jim Muirhead.

A Cheadle Hulme High School student who was invited to DHS said: “I really enjoyed watching the orchestra and having a go at improvising with Chethams musicians.”

On the final day of residency every student at DHS was able to watch the orchestra perform. Each concert was presented by Chetham’s prinipal Tom Redmond. We saw incredible performances of David Heath’s percussion concerto African Sunrise/Manhattan Rave, Rachmaninoff Symphony No.2 and Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3.

The Fish in Schools Hero Programme aims to ensure that every child gets a chance to prepare, cook and eat fish before they leave school.

The fish will be used by some of our Year 9 students during a Food and Nutrition enrichment lesson later on in the term. Students will not only learn about wild fisheries and the different tastes, textures and usages, but also cook with the fish themselves.

On Wednesday the Y8 DEC Award elective students had a fantastic opportunity to visit Deansgate Square. This was hosted by our construction adopter Renaker, the developers behind the huge regeneration project of the Great Jackson Street area.

Students were invited to the marketing suite where they were given a presentation around the amazing scale models of the site so they could have an understanding of the huge development taking place in the area. It helped to have an insight into what buildings have already been built, the construction that is currently underway and proposals for future buildings across the site.

Students then had a tour of two of the huge towers that have already been built and occupied. One of which being Deansgate South Tower which is the tallest building in Manchester standing 201m high. Students were lucky enough to have access to one of the spectacular pent house apartments on the 64th floor. The views across Greater Manchester and beyond were fantastic.

It was a great opportunity for our students who are interested in architecture and the built environment to be able to visit such a fantastic development. Students found it very inspirational and they had a fantastic experience.

Huge thank you to our industry adopter Renaker for the experience.

The Laurus Trust is proud to announce a new partnership with Loughborough University aimed at supporting the sporting stars of the future.

The Trust, which has Ofsted-outstanding Cheadle Hulme High School in Stockport as its founder school, has developed its brand new ELITE Pathway initiative to help talented students thrive and excel in the sporting arena while being fully supported in their academic achievements.

The ELITE Pathway is run by the Laurus Trust and supported by the Law Family Educational Trust.

The Laurus Trust is sponsored by the Law Family Educational Trust, founded by Andrew Law. Andrew Law said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic partnership. It is a great example of our progress in trying to level the playing field in education relative to private schools, with particular focus on co-curricular initiatives.â€

The Pathway will provide specific opportunities not usually available within state education to those students with the potential to participate in sport at the highest level.

Up to 60 students across the Laurus Trust’s five secondary schools will have the opportunity to work with high level coaches and receive expert support.

Ambitious students will work with some of sport’s leading clubs and trainers in tailored mentoring and coaching sessions. There will be personal training, strength and conditioning coaching, bespoke prehab and rehab sessions, video analysis and links with nutritionists, psychologists and physiotherapists.

This is the first time Loughborough University has partnered with schools to deliver such an ambitious programme.

Loughborough has been named one of the UK’s leading universities, with an international reputation for research, academic excellence and unrivalled achievement in sport. It has been awarded five stars in the independent QS stars university rating scheme and named the best university in the world for sports-related subjects – consistently appearing in the top 10 national league tables.

Ed Haslam, Laurus Trust Director of Sporting Excellence said: “We’re incredibly excited to launch the ELITE Pathway to ensure every student has access to an all-round, educational, sporting experience.

“Our principles very much align with those of Loughborough University and we are thrilled to have them on board to help support the training and education of our student athletes.â€

Loughborough University will be working to support the Laurus Trust’s ELITE Pathway, which will focus on providing the selected students with the invaluable experience of living, training and learning like a top athlete, balancing the demands of their sporting dreams with academic success.

Dr Ash Casey of Loughborough University said: “This partnership presents a fantastic opportunity to work with young people, their teachers and their schools to enhance what is happening across their education.

“When the Laurus Trust first approached us about a partnership, it was obvious that they placed learning, personal development and support of their students at the heart of what they were doing.

“This mirrors the university’s ethos, and this long-term partnership allows us to take what we do best – i.e., sport – and use it to enable Laurus individuals to excel.â€

To be considered for the ELITE Pathway, potential students need to meet stringent criteria. They must be playing at a regional or national level, dedicating a significant number of hours per week to their training and have an ambition to play at the highest level with the potential to be accepted onto an international or Olympic/ Paralympic pathway.

As the end of yet another remarkable academic year draws to a close, we reflect on the challenges and successes that have come our way and marvel at the way in which, once again, the entire school community has come together.

The lockdown experienced in the spring term saw more than 40,000 live lessons delivered remotely across Laurus Trust schools, which is an absolutely phenomenal amount and was made possible thanks to the hard work of so many people. Teachers, support staff, parents, carers and of course the students themselves all played a vital part in the delivery and success of our online lessons, and we could not be prouder of how everyone has pulled together.

The determination and positivity which everyone has shown throughout this extended period of disruption is incredible and the hard work displayed by our students both at home and in school is to be commended.

Despite all the uncertainty, the return to school in March was fantastic and so much has been achieved during the spring and summer months.

We were delighted to welcome author Alex Sheppard to âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ for an online visit as well as representatives from the construction and engineering industries, talking about career opportunities and the various routes into them. A number of students took part in the National Reading Champions Quiz, and we held our first ever Physics Week in school, which included virtual trips to CERN and Jodrell Bank.

We now hope and look forward to a more settled term when we return in September but all that’s left for now is to thank you all for your continued support and wish you a happy, safe and well-deserved summer holiday.

Towards the end of last term, 25 of our students took part in a virtual poetry workshop with Olivia Mulligan, BBC Radio York’s Poet Laureate.

They were nominated by their English teachers for continuous hard work and had the chance to work with Olivia, looking at her poems and working on some of their own.

Olivia shared some of the poems from her latest collection, Poems on the Gatepost, which she wrote while in lockdown and shielding.

Students then had the opportunity to carry out collective work as a class before taking part in discussion, feedback and a Q & A session with Olivia, to find out more about her writing career and the creative process.

It was a fantastic day so thanks to Olivia for this wonderful opportunity.

You can find out more about Olivia Mulligan on her Facebook Page

âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ students had the opportunity to host award-winning author, Anna Hoghton, whose debute children’s novel The Mask of Aribella was released in January.

The book has since been shortlisted for the Sakura Medal, a reading programme that brings students together to vote for their favourite book.

The Mask of Aribella is an action and fantasy book about a girl who discovers she has a secret power.

The event saw Anna talking to students virtually about the setting of the book and reading short extracts, followed by a Q&A with the students. Students were able to purchase a personally signed copy of The Mask of Aribella.

After the event a cross-Trust competition was launched encouraging students to design their own mask inspired by the book. The competition deadline is Friday 4 December.
