The festive season is in full swing and students from our enterprise elective have been busy designing and making products to sell for charity.

Didbsury High students have made a whole host of wooden ornaments, which have been snapped up as Christmas gifts by those wanting to give something a little different Ìýthis year or add something special to their own Christmas tree.

All of the beautiful designs were made to order by students with the school’s laser cutter, and were personalised for that perfect finishing touch.

The products looked fantastic and proved to be extremely popular, with total sales reaching well over £200.

The money raised will now be split between the school’s house charities.

The project has been a wonderful celebration of the students’ innovation and creativity and we’re delighted that their hard work is also helping a number of charities during this season of goodwill.

The sounds of the steel pans are ringing out around âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ, thanks to musician Byron Calame from One Education Music, who is providing weekly tuition to our students on the percussion instrument.

We currently have 35 students taking part in the lessons, with more set to join us once our eagerly awaited, hand-crafted steel pans arrive from Trinidad in the next few weeks.

One Education supports schools in a variety of ways including providing high-quality music lessons and it’s fantastic that we can offer steel pan lessons with Byron every Wednesday morning.

There is a full and varied music provision at Didsbury High, with many students learning an instrument and others involved in the wind band, string ensemble and vocal groups.

It’s wonderful to see so many of our students involved in music and joining in the steel pan lessons, developing their musicianship and enriching their education.

We are absolutely delighted that live productions are finally returning to âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ and what better way to kick things off than with Disney’s The Lion King JR?

The 60-minute junior version of this famous musical has been adapted especially for schools and is based on the 1994 Disney film. It features the classic song Hakuna Matata and Academy Award-winning Can You Feel the Love Tonight, as well as additional numbers penned for the Broadway production.

We cannot wait to get started on this production and with such an array of talent at Didsbury High we already know we’re going to have an exceptionally strong cast for this theatrical extravaganza.

After such a long hiatus due to the pandemic, it’s wonderful news that our students can tread the boards once again and showcase their talents on and off stage to a live audience.

Performances will be held 16 – 18 March 2022 so make a note in your diary as this is one show you will not want to miss.

Before travelling to and from school it is important to plan ahead and consider different options.

Transport for Greater Manchester has , with information about public transport services, tickets and passes, latest travel guidance and advice around cycling and walking.

If you can, please consider whether your child can walk or cycle to school – it can be a safe and healthy way to make shorter trips. With new cycling and walking routes popping up across the region, it is safer and easier than ever to get about on foot or by bike.

If you do need to drive, please switch off your engine when waiting outside to reduce air pollution and, if possible, try parking further away and walking the last part of the journey.

Visit our Travel page for more local information.

All students at âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ have begun learning how to administer CPR and use a defibrillator as part of their Beliefs & Values lessons.

They are being taught by the school’s lead first aider Miss da Silva, who also volunteers with the North West Ambulance Service as a first responder.

The sessions were already scheduled to take place but after events unfolded on the pitch at the Euros last weekend, it’s a timely reminder of how important these life-saving techniques are.

After Danish footballer Christian Eriksen received CPR during Denmark’s match against Finland last Saturday, there are now calls for first aid to be taught in all schools and we’re extremely fortunate to already have the benefit of Miss da Silva’s knowledge and experience.

Miss da Silva, a qualified teacher, joined the team at Didsbury High in January having spent five years as a first aid trainer and assessor. She will now teach Basic Life Support and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use within school and all students will have a lesson on these life-saving skills by the end of term.

The summer term is off to an exciting start here at âÓ¶¹appÏÂÔØ as we welcome a number of visitors from the design, construction and engineering (DEC) industries.

Ìý

As a school, we have recently signed up to the DEC in schools programme organised by Class of Your Own (COYO) to help promote and encourage careers in these sectors. Ìý

Ìý

The initiative, which is being run as part of our electives programme, includes the opportunity for students to enter the COYO Challenge 2021 – Design the COP (an education centre for our planet). Ìý

Ìý

Students are tasked with designing a sustainable and energy efficient buildingÌýwhere young people can explore and understand climate change and become ambassadors and custodians of planet earth.Ìý

Ìý

The competition is based around the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which is being held in Glasgow later this year.Ìý

Ìý

It was launched at DHS by Daniel McDonagh from Class of Your Own, who spoke to our students about the project and answered their questions about the DEC sector and industry-based learning. Ìý

Ìý

Daniel’s visit is the start of a number that we have arranged for students entering the competition.ÌýThey have so far been inspired by representatives from real estate giant Renaker and are looking forward to welcoming an architect from urban designers Broadway Malyan on 12 May.Ìý

Ìý

Further visits are lined up to give our students a greater insight as they begin to work on their design solutions for the challenge, which they will submit with a physical scale model and a written report. Ìý

Ìý

We are delighted to be offering this innovative and fascinating project to our students and wish them all the very best of luck in the competition.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý
